Location Feature

Granville Street

Location choice instantly creates a mood. One of my favourite places to shoot is downtown Halifax. A mix of old and new architecture provides shade from harsh light, with doorways, streetscaping, and buildings creating an interesting (but not overwhelming) backdrop.

Streets, buildings, and sidewalks provide neutral surroundings for dancers. A similarly-toned wardrobe will create a monotone look, while a pop of colour will make a dancer stand out against architecture. With urban backdrops, you really can’t go wrong wearing anything from classical dancewear to street clothes, bare feet to sneakers or pointe shoes.

For sessions taking place on the streets, I highly recommend packing hand wipes and/or sanitiser. Feet get dirty very quickly when shooting in urban areas, as do hands that are grasping railings or touching sidewalks.
