Coastal Dance Grads
I don’t tend to make New Year’s resolutions, but I did promise myself that in 2025 I would make more time for creative work. This session with some of the 2025 graduates of Coastal Dance Inc. was a lovely return to experimental and collaborative shooting.
Lighting instantly creates a mood, and makes photos stand out from the crowd. In dance photography, creative setups can be used to highlight lines, musculature, and technique.
In this session, we played with a few lighting options including work with gels and silhouettes, highlights and shadows.
The sophistication of a silhouette can’t be beat. Lines and technique are front and centre, and should be considered when planning poses.
Gels cast surreal colour over dancers and the entire set. Colours are easily changed, which makes multiple looks in one session possible.
Light placement can change the entire look of a shot. We played with several placements to diversify our looks during this session.
